Karma and the Twelve Nidanas
Tuesday, September 7th , Tuesday, September 14th , Tuesday, September 21st , Tuesday, September 28th and Tuesday, October 5th at 20:00

Who am I? How did I get here, and where am I going? Looking directly at the experience of mind, we begin to understand our apparent confusion about ourselves and the phenomena of our world. Renouncing the painful cycle of confused action (karma), we use the natural inquisitiveness of mind to see how confusion arises and therefore how it could simply cease, allowing awake wisdom to manifest.

Karma—cause-and-effect action—can be broken down into twelve links, or nidanas. In this course we look at how these links work together, how the vicious circle of confusion and suffering arises and therefore how it can cease, allowing innate wisdom to manifest.

Maitri Bhavana
Every last Wednesday at 19:00 : August 25th , September 29th , October 27th , November 24th , December 29th
Meditation on loving-kindness for the seriously ill.

Sometimes it can be difficult to relate to others' sickness and suffering. We may feel helpless to help them or blame ourselves for being fearful or uncomfortable. This practice cultivates generosity and openness to the suffering of others, offering them health, spaciousness and compassion. Through developing the willingness and strength of mind to really look at our own and other's suffering, we can give up the selfish habits that close us off from others. As Trungpa Rinpoche says, "[Maitri Bhavana] involves developing a sense of immense generosity and being willing to suffer for others. One's own personal gain and achievement could be shared--in fact, given up."

Please add to the list posted at the Centre a week before the practice date the names and illnesses of relatives and friends who are seriously ill, physically or mentally. You should include someone because you feel a personal concern for their suffering, such as a grandparent dying of cancer.

Each practice session includes sitting meditation, tonglen (sending and taking) meditation, and a short liturgy.

Open to all.

Sadhana of Mahamudra
Wednesday, September 8th at 19:00
Wednesday, October 6th at 19:00
Wednesday, November 3rd at 19:00
Wednesday, December 22nd at 19:00
Sadhana of MahamudraThe Sadhana of Mahamudra was written by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and contains the essence of his teachings for the West. This practice speaks directly to how we can overcome our confusion and the spiritual materialism of our times, and find profound truth in the ordinary phenomenal world. The sadhana consists of meditation and chants, and lasts about an hour. It is done regularly at all Shambhala Centres on or near full and new moon days, when our moods and thought patterns tend to be most unruly.

The Sadhana of Mahamudra has been acknowledged as terma. Terma are teachings that were concealed by the great Tibetan teacher Padmasambhava and other teachers for the sake of future generations, and are rediscovered at the auspicious time when they are needed.

The Sadhana of Mahamudra practice is rich with symbols that may seem strange to some new practitioners. Don't expect to understand it fully the first time you do it. As with other teachings, understanding develops through practice and contemplation. So we encourage newcomers to come and experience this wonderful sadhana. The chant leader will be available to answer questions and will provide a simple explanation of how to do the practice before it begins.

AWAKE. NOW. - Meditation and Making a Film
Saturday, August 21st from 09:00 to 16:00
On Saturday August 21st there will a unique day at the Shambhala Centre titled:  "AWAKE. NOW." This will consist of a day of mindful practice being filmed to produce a short film reflecting a typical practice of Shambhala sitting meditation.  "AWAKE. NOW." is the working title of the film and will be directed by Peter O’Rourke, filmed by Lynn Pfeffer and sound by Krzysztof Szychowski. Following editing, the filmmakers hope to enter this informational "work of art" in various film festivals and other venues.

This will be an all-day event starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 4:00 p.m. Participants will need to commit to the entire day since the same people are needed in each of the scenes. A light lunch will be served. You should find this an interesting exercise, hopefully gaining some insights into how a film is made and what it’s like to be involved in one.

As volunteer participants,  in addition to being "practicing actors", you can also try your hand assisting the film crew if you wish (setting lights between takes, holding microphones and doing sound checks). While we will be sitting from time to time throughout the day but primarily practicing “mindful filmmaking” You will be filmed as you enter the centre, line up for sitting, enter the shrine room, take your places at a cushion and prepare as you ordinarily would to practice. We will film this from various angles and points of view so you will likely enter, line up and then sit more than once … or twice. The umdze will also be filmed as he or she enters, bows, lights the shrine candles and takes a position on the cushion … possibly more than once .. or twice.

As a creative and cinematic addition, we will sound record (the same day or later) the thoughts that participants might have as they enter the centre, line up and are sitting on the cushion. These will be edited in during post production as "voice overs" representing people’s thoughts.  As you can imagine, it will likely be an eclectic array of thoughts--from the absurd to profound--that will crescendo just below a chaotic level and then rapidly dwindle to silence at the first gong, at which time the film will end fading out to white.

To assist us in the "voice over" narrative, please e-mail me in advance if possible your ideas for "thoughts", be they humorous or serious, in either English or French.

There is no fee to participate.

Maitri: 5 Wisdom Energies
Friday, November 12th at 19:00 , Saturday, November 13th and Sunday, November 14th from 08:30 to 17:00
This weekend program invites us to become curious about our personal energy patterns and how they affect every experience of our life. The use of colors, postures, meditation practice and exercises, evokes the five different styles of energy, or personality types, found in Buddhist teachings. These styles describe different ways we relate to ourselves and the world from our clarity, expansiveness, passion, action and sense of being. If we relax with the energy, our inherent wisdom guides us; if we contract against it, the energy is forced into distortion. Yet the wisdom energy is always available when we learn to pay attention and develop maitri, loving kindness, towards ourselves.

Instructor:
Myra Woodruff, MA, MSW, is a psychotherapist in private practice in Burlington Vermont who has been teaching Maitri practice for fifteen years.

In this, the second in the series of Shambhala Training workshops, we cultivate our willingness to observe our cocoon of habitual fear and defense mechanisms. We begin to appreciate that there is no fundamental obstacle to experiencing basic goodness.

The program consists of meditation instruction and practice, individual interviews, talks, and group discussion.

The Way of Shambhala Course II: Contentment in Everyday Life
Thursday, November 11th , Thursday, November 18th , Thursday, November 25th , Thursday, December 2nd and Thursday, December 9th at 19:00

Tiger"Suffering is a result of roaming, the urge to keep looking for an external source of happiness. Much of our stress these days is caused by simple lack of contentment." -Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche

This course builds on the discovery of basic goodness and introduces the foundational teachings of Buddhism. By seeing clearly the painful conditions and emotions that keep us trapped in habitual patterns, we can open further to our inherent goodness. We learn to train in gentleness, precision, appreciation, and steadiness. Practicing these qualities leads to contentment, which helps us extend our mindfulness practice into everyday awake action.
